Postpartum Doula

If you need some help after your birth to transition during this special time in your life, we offer postpartum doula services. What a postpartum doula does changes from day to day, as the needs of the family change. Postpartum doulas do whatever a mother needs to best enjoy and care for her new baby. A large part of their role is education. They share information about baby care with parents, as well as teach siblings and partners to “mother the mother.” They assist with breastfeeding education. Postpartum doulas also make sure the mother is fed, well hydrated and comfortable.

Some of the Benefits of postpartum doula include:

  • Increased rates of successful breastfeeding
  • Less maternal exhaustion frustration, and apprehension during the early weeks
  • Greater understanding of newborn emotional and physical needs and behavior
  • Earlier bonding due to increased mater nal confidence, and reduced rates of maternal postpartum depression
  • Fathers and other family members benefit from the role of a doula as well. Research tells us that support for and from the partner can have a significant impact on their own experience as well as the emotional adjustment of the mother.
  • As new parents together they benefit from education on what to expect from a newborn, baby-soothing skills, feeding, bonding and attachment and coping skills.
  • The goal of a doula is to nurture the parents into their new roles. As they experience success and their knowledge and self-confidence grow, their need for professional support will diminish.
